How to Select a Family Law Attorney in Florida

May 24, 2019

WHO IS RIGHT FOR MY CASE?

Now that you have made the decision to hire a family law attorney, how do you go about it? Let’s face it. There are a lot of lawyers in Florida. However, it’s not every
lawyer that is suitable for your case. Here are some of the things you need to look out for when you’re selecting a family law attorney.

LOOK FOR COMFORT

If you’re not comfortable with your family law attorney, then you have a problem. You need to be comfortable because you have to rely almost solely on what the attorney
says.

Unless you have some background knowledge of family law, there’ll be very little scope for you to question what your attorney says you need to do.

So you need to be comfortable with the attorney you’re seeking advice from or who’s giving you instructions on how to move forward with your case. This is one of the first things that a competent family law attorney will try to ensure.

LOOK FOR THE PRICE

It’s not a secret that lawyers can be very costly and the cost often increases with the difficulty of your case. Attorneys may calculate their fees by hourly rates or on a flat fee agreement. You want to consider which is best for you and your budget.

The hourly method structures the fees along the number of hours the attorney would require to resolve your case from beginning to end. They could require a retainer from which these hourly rates will be deducted. The downside of this method is, no one really knows how long your case could take. So it could be a bit harsh on your budget.

The flat fee agreement is best for when you have a set budget with no intention to go over that budget. This agreement is often used for fairly straightforward cases. Of course, the case could end up taking more time than was anticipated or less. Whatever you decide, make sure it’s best for you.

ALWAYS ASK QUESTIONS

You are entitled to ask questions regarding your case. In a consultation, you have a right to understand every aspect of your case within the facts being presented. You should have a pretty clear understanding of the scenarios that are before you.

Unless your case has a very unique set of circumstances, you should have a clear idea of the strengths and weaknesses of your case by the time you’re leaving the attorney’s office. More importantly, you should know how the attorney plans to attack your case if you hire them.

There are many ways to attack a case and all of these depend on the circumstances of your case. Make sure you ask every question you need to ask in order for you to understand exactly what is going to happen in your case.

LOOK YOUR ATTORNEY UP

There’s nothing wrong with searching out your lawyer. You need to make sure that you understand the person you’re coming to meet. If that attorney is licensed to practice in Florida, there’ll be some information about them online.

You can check up their Florida bar page, social media accounts like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter or even a simple Google search. Look your attorney up. They would often have information about themselves and their past cases online.

Your time is valuable, so is your money. You don’t want to go spending your money on an attorney if you don’t know them and what they can do.
